Infrared nonredundant mask imaging at Palomar

چکیده
We have recently begun a program of high resolution infrared imaging at Palomar Observatory. As a part of this effort, we have investigated the use of nonredundant masks both as an imaging technique and as a method of analyzing various aspects of our imaging system. In particular, we have applied the technique to a bright star and binary system using a three-hole mask. We find the method is useful for understanding certain systematic biases in our data, as well as in producing high quality images despite sparse uv coverage. We find that the use of multi-r0 apertures along with a large bandwidth does not significantly hamper image, reconstruction, but provides significant extra coverage in the uv plane.

Diffraction-limited Imaging with Ground-based Optical Telescopes
The construction of diffraction-limited images with ground-based optical telescopes by means of closure-phase observations is explored. The effect of redundant baselines on closure-phase observations is analyzed, and it is shown that for bright objects a nonredundant-mask approach is superior to the use of the full aperture. Observations of closure phase with a nonredundant mask on the 200 in. ...
متن کاملOptical/Near-Infrared Imaging of Infrared-Excess Palomar-Green QSOs
Ground-based high spatial-resolution (FWHM < 0.3–0.8) optical and nearinfrared imaging (0.4—2.2 μm) is presented for a complete sample of optically selected Palomar-Green QSOs with far-infrared excesses at least as great as those of “warm” AGN-like ultraluminous infrared galaxies (Lir/Lbig−blue−bump > 0.46). In all cases, the host galaxies of the QSOs were detected and most have discernable two...
متن کاملInfrared Speckle Imaging at Palomar
We present diffraction-limited infrared images of three binary stars reconstructed using speckle imaging techniques. Three methods of recovering the objects' Fourier amplitudes are compared, Fourier deconvolution, projection onto convex sets, and CLEAN. The objects' Fourier phases are retrieved via bispectral analysis. We find that the quality of the final reconstructed images is a function of ...
متن کاملInfrared Echelle Spectroscopy of Palomar 6 and M71
We present high-resolution infrared echelle spectroscopy for the globular clusters Palomar 6 and M71. Our mean heliocentric radial velocity of Palomar 6 is +180.6 ± 3.2 km sec and is 20 km sec lower than that found by Minniti in 1995. Contrary to the previous metallicity estimates using low-resolution spectroscopy, our results show that Palomar 6 has an intermediate metallicity with [Fe/H] = −1...
متن کاملHigh-speed Imaging and Wavefront Sensing with an Infrared Avalanche Photodiode Array
Infrared avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays represent a panacea for many branches of astronomy by enabling extremely low-noise, high-speed, and even photon-counting measurements at near-infrared wavelengths. We recently demonstrated the use of an early engineering-grade infrared APD array that achieves a correlated double sampling read noise of 0.73 e in the lab, and a total noise of 2.52 e on s...
